Author Sheyna Galyan comes to Bierstube Nov. 17
Minnesota Author Sheyna Galyan will meet with readers at the Bierstube in Hastings at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 as part of the monthly “Bookstube at the Bierstube” author event.
This event is free and open to the public. Galyan will share stories about her life as an author and more and will answer questions from Hastings area residents.
Galyan is the author of “Destined to Choose,” a novel about a college freshman whose philosophy paper on the Holocaust causes a rift between her and her family. Help comes in the form of Rabbi David Cohen, who is struggling with his own personal demons. Trained in both psychology and Talmudic argument, David must help this family face the real issue that divides them. Set against the backdrop of a Jewish holiday of mourning, they bring together their experiences as they confront evil itself and answer a cry for help that no one expected.
Galyan said she has always been spiritual but did not grow up in a religious home. She reclaimed her Judaism when she was 15.
“Religion for me, as it is for my protagonist David in the Rabbi David Cohen series, is a framework for helping us to understand our relationship with God, our relationship(s) with our community(ies), and our relationship with ourselves,” she said.
She has spent more than 30 years learning from several rabbis, both formally and informally, online and in person. She has also formally and informally taught Judaism to Jews and Christians, “as a way to help others understand what this rich tradition means in this age of iEverything,” she said.
Galyan’s urge to write started when she was 8 years old, when she wanted to read a particular plot about a girl and a horse. A teacher told her that she didn’t think the book had been written yet, and suggested Galyan should write it herself.
“I did, and I’ve been writing ever since,” she said.
