Hastings High School's Elliot Wilcox saved his best for last. The decorated Hastings swimmer placed second in two events at the state meet Saturday night at the University of Minnesota.
In the process, he broke a 15-year-old school record and earned All-American honors.
"Elliot had a strong state meet," Hastings swim coach Gerry Rupp said. "It was quite a statement from him."
Wilcox got his meet off to a great start Friday by swimming the fastest time in the 50 prelims at 21.11 seconds. A few events later, he did the same thing, setting the fastest mark in the 100 freestyle at 46.96 seconds.
At Saturday's finals, Wilcox got touched-out in the 50 freestyle by Rosemount's Devon Meeks, who had a time of 20.84 seconds. Wilcox again had a time of 21.11.
"We thought Elliot could go a little bit faster in finals," Rupp said. "Like I've said before, everything has to be perfect to pull off a victory in the 50. He wasn't quite perfect off his turn. He had to make up a little bit of ground. Unfortunately, he couldn't quite make it back. Nonetheless, it as a very good swim. We were very happy with his swim."
Wilcox established a new school record with the time, breaking the old mark set in 1995 by Jeremy Witikko.
In the 100 freestyle, Wilcox had a qualifying time just three hundredths of a second faster than Edina's Drew Johnson. Wilcox had a time of 46.96 and Johnson's time was 46.99.
"(Johnson) hadn't shaved for prelims, and we know that he would be very fast in finals," Rupp said. "We knew it would be a tall order to beat him, which proved so."
Wilcox cut three tenths of a second from his time, but still couldn't catch Johnson, who finished in 45.44. Wilcox came in at 46.62, an All-American consideration time.
"Elliot was probably giving up eight inches in height to (Johnson)," Rupp said. "Elliot did a great job of hammering out second place."
Wilcox came close to breaking another of Wittiko's records. The old mark, though, of 46.24 still stands.
Hastings eighth-grader Colby Smith placed 12th in the 200 individual medley and 15th in the 100 butterfly.
In the individual medley, he had a time of 2:02.87 in prelims and a time of 2:02.24 in finals.
In the butterfly, he had a time of 54.62 seconds in prelims and a time of 54.68 in finals. The event was won
