Talk about pressure. Sheesh. There I?sat with the world of toppings at my fingertips, and I didn't know which way to go.

I had decided to get the half-pound Works burger at the Stein Haus in Vermillion. But the catch is that you can put whatever you want on the thing. Sounds like a dream, right? But with all the possibilities, I didn't know which way was up.

Finally, I?decided to get my Works burger loaded up with pepper cheese, fried onions, jalapenos, mushrooms and bacon.

I don't know why it was called the Works burger -- I didn't get any work done the rest of the day. All I could think about was sleep.

It was a great burger. It smelled just as good as it tasted, which was no small feat. Talk about a wonderful aroma for burger lovers!

Of course, we started our burger day with the loaded cheese fries, a must at the Stein Haus.

But, back to burgers: the selection of burgers is great. There are 10 on the menu, from the simple cheeseburger to a pepper cheeseburger (with ham, mushrooms, pepper cheese and fried onions) and the Juicy Lucy.

About the Stein Haus

The Stein Haus is located in Vermillion on 190th Street (County Road 66). Vermillion is south of Hastings. To get there, take Highway 47 out of town and turn right on 190th Street. The restaurant will be on your left.

It is owned by Joe Ryan, who also owns RJ's Tavern on Main in Hastings.

Don't like burgers?

It should come as no surprise that a small-town restaurant across the street from a Catholic church has a great fish fry.

The Stein Haus has a great one, serving up "lightly beer battered Icelandic cod fillets." The fish is served with cole slaw, baked beans, garlic toast and your choice of potato for $11.95. The senior portion for those 65 and older is $10.95.

The Stein Haus also serves steak, fried chicken and ribs.

The day we were there, the lunch buffet was a big hit. Most of the patrons in the Stein Haus were munching on fried chicken, ribs and mashed potatoes for lunch.

Stein Haus also has a chili and reuben special.

Regina Medical Center dietician Christina Gapp looked over the menu at the Stein Haus and had this to say about healthful options there:

"The Stein Haus is set apart from fast food restaurants in that its food is home-cooked and the space provides the provincial feeling you find in a small town atmosphere. Just ask about their specials and staff will take the time to reveal why you should try their food and what is 'hot' on the menu. Seasonal specials are available. A wide variety of homemade soups are on the menu. The manager is also a bartender and waitress, and she cooks, too. She knows the ingredients and wants your feedback!

"A healthful option at the Stein Haus is the marinated chicken breast filet, non-breaded and mayo served on the side, with lettuce and tomato and a side of coleslaw. Side salads are available. Salad bars are offered on weekends.

"They do encourage sharing a meal as a small group; for example, you can order broasted chicken for a family of four and find that it fits your budget and your appetite.

"Eating alone and in a hurry can result in higher intakes of sodas, fast food and fatty foods, while eating dinner together with other people is associated with higher intake of fruit and vegetables, including dark-green and orange vegetables, according to a recent study at the University of Minnesota. Eat with a friend or a family member and enjoy the company. Eating at home will result in the most nutritious options, generally with lower calories and fat than found in the restaurant setting specializing in table-service."
