Heading into the Hastings golf season, it looks like the boys high school team should have a great season.

And, if what Alex Wagner did a couple weeks ago is any indication, those high hopes are realistic.

Wagner had a hole-in-one during tryouts at Bellwood Oaks. He aced the fourth hole using a pitching wedge.

Not a bad way to secure a spot on the varsity roster, eh?

More good stuff:

• Shea Sajevic, Hastings, is a first baseman on the Augsburg College baseball team. He has played in nine games so far this season for Augsburg, which is off to a 13-14 start.

He'll see fellow Hastings native Brandon Boyd on the diamond this spring. Boyd plays in the outfield for Gustavus, an MIAC foe of Augsburg.

Boyd has started 15 games for the Gusties and is batting .227 with five RBI. They have a 12-12 record thus far.

Sean Dube is also in the MIAC. He is a sophomore on the St. Olaf College team. He plays infield for the Northfield school.

In 13 games, he is batting .281 with 10 RBI and one steal.

• Adam Welch, Hastings, is a member of the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL

His cousin, Dan Welch, is his teammate.

During 69 games with the Steelheads this year, the defenseman scored a goal and had 11 assists. He was a +9 and had 72 penalty minutes.

The Steelheads are in the playoffs right now and trail the Victoria Salmon Kings, 2-0, in a best-of-seven series.

Adam played collegiately at Ferris State University, where he was a captain for three seasons. Prior to joining Ferris State, Welch played with the Wichita Falls (Texas) Rustlers of the NAHL.

• Taylor VanderAarde, Hastings, is the director of baseball operations at the University of Minnesota. He is also serving as the school's assistant office director for the women's basketball program.

He was a three-year letterwinner for the Gophers baseball team, and he was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

He earned a degree in communications and is pursuing a master's in applied kinesiology.
