Victim in assault dies

The victim of an early-morning assault last week in Hastings has died.

The man, 32-year-old Bradley Sanders of Bakersfield, Mo., died this week.

The exact cause of death is not clear at this point, and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office is performing an autopsy to determine why he died.

Sanders had gotten into an altercation with 27-year-old James Nathan Phenix of West Plains, Mo., and was pushed and/or shoved. When officers arrived, they found Sanders on his back. Police and paramedics performed first aid until he was transported to United Hospital in St. Paul.

Phenix was then arrested. He was released earlier this week pending further investigation.

The assault took place just outside Perkins in the 1200 block of Vermillion Street just after 3 a.m. on Friday, May 9.
