Veterans Day observances planned for Nov. 11
Those who served their country will be honored at Veteran’s Day observances Monday, Nov. 11. The Hastings Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1210, Hastings Community Education and the Minnesota Veteran’s Home, Hastings, are holding activities.
The VFW post is holding a dinner and program at the Green Mill Event Center.
Tickets are $11 and are available at Green Mill, American Legion Post 47, and Wednesday and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the VFW Post.
The guest speaker is Colonel John A. Smyrski III, commander of U.S. Army Aero Medical Laboratory, Ft. Rucker, Ala., and formerly of Hastings. A distinguished military graduate, he received a regular Army commission as a second lieutenant in the Aviation Branch.
Smyrski is currently the commander of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Laboratory, U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, Fort Rucker.
His many awards and decorations include two Bronze Stars, six Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi and Afghanistan Campaign Medals.
Smyrski, originally from Hastings, is married to the former Margaret (Meg) Walerius of Glenwood, Minn.. They have two children. He is the son of John and (late) Mary Smyrski of Hastings.
Hastings School District will hold a Veteran’s Day celebration at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Tilden Community Center, 310 River St.
The featured speaker is Korean War Veteran Dick Hullander. Music will be provided by Dave Pattridge and include a patriotic sing-a-long. A reception will be held following the event. The Veteran’s Day celebration is free to the public; no registration is required.
As part of this traditional celebration, the community is being asked to write appreciation letters to veterans. Information is available at www.hastingscommunityed.com. Letters can be sent to Veteran’s Day Appreciation Letters, Hastings Community Education, 310 River Street, Hastings, MN 55033.
All letters will be displayed at the Veteran’s Day Celebration. Veterans in attendance will be encouraged to take a letter home with them. Remaining letters will be delivered to the Hastings Veterans Home.
The Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings will host a Veterans Day event at 10 a.m. Monday in the auditorium. The keynote speaker will be Iraq veteran SSG Alyn Tanner. This event is open to the public.
