Two structure fires reported over the weekend
Hastings firefighters kept busy over the weekend, responding to numerous medical situations and two structure fires within 24 hours.
Following a motorcycle crash Saturday that resulted in two people being transported to Regions Hospital, firefighters were called to a house fire in the 1200 block of Eddy Street. When they arrived, responders were unsure if anyone was still inside the house, so they entered the structure to do a rapid interior search while starting to combat the fire. No one was home at the time.
The fire started in the home's kitchen and ignited the floor trusses and walls in that area. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious. It took crews about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.
The flames were confined to the kitchen area, although smoke damage was reported throughout the home. Damage is estimated at about $50,000.
At the same time as the house fire, an emergency medical situation arose in the Midtown area. It was not related to the fire.
Hastings firefighters were assisted by the Miesville Fire Department and Hastings Police Department.
More medical calls kept firefighter/paramedics busy Saturday evening. A second structure fire was reported at 6:25 a.m. Sunday morning. A portable ice house had caught fire next to a home in the 6000 block of St. Croix Trail in Denmark Township. When firefighters arrived, the fire had fully engulfed the ice house and was beginning to spread to the deck of the house. The fire was extinguished. Damage was done to the deck but not the house.
No one was injured in either fire.
