Two Hastings High School students were honored by Hastings Rotary Club recently at a Rotarians breakfast and meeting.

Ashley Brownson was Rotary's student of the month for March, and Nick Peterson was honored in April. Both recently spoke at a Rotary Club meeting and, along with their parents, accepted the honors.

Ashley Brownson was nominated by HHS family and consumer science teacher Rosie Tarnowski and counselor Melissa Bezotte.

In her acceptance speech, Brownson gave everyone a glimpse at how the students find out they're receiving the honor.

"When Mr. (Mike) Johnson (principal) walked into Mrs. Tarnowski's seventh-hour class and congratulated me, I was incredibly honored," she said. Johnson enjoys honoring students in front of their peers. And he enjoys delivering good news.

The Rotary award is about "service over self." Brownson talked about making a point at lunch of searching out the new kid on his or her first day of school.

"Lunch time is always the most frightening time on the first day of school," she said. "That's actually how I met my best friend.

Brownson is part of the color guard, show choir, in theater, and on student council. She's also a part of Link Crew, helping freshmen adjust to high school.

Brownson plans to go into pediatric nursing with a focus on oncology at Concordia University-Wisconsin.

She called the two women who nominated her "the most influential women I have ever come across in my life, besides my mom."

Nick Peterson was nominated by Hastings High School French teacher Brian Drummond and his wife, Sue.

Peterson is vice president of the French Honor Society. He is also a person who takes part in what the school has to offer.

Besides the French Honor Society, Peterson is involved in Hastings Riverside Company, the high school show choir; student council; National Honor Society; and Link Crew. Peterson is also a peer tutor.

He has lettered in soccer, golf, academics and as a Link Crew leader.

And did we mention Boy Scouts. Peterson is an Eagle Scout. For his project to earn the ranking of Eagle Scout, Peterson organized a food drive because he recognized a need to fill the food shelf at Hastings Family Service during an off-peak time.

Peterson plans to attend the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He plans on going into pre-med.
