Third annual state hospital reunion is set for May 22
The former Hastings State Hospital employees enjoyed their first and second annual reunion the previous two years so much, they decided to hold another.
This year’s reunion will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, in the Green Mill Event Center, located above Premier Bank, 101 E. 10th St. (Schoolhouse Square). The meal is catered by the Green Mill. A cash bar will be available.
The menu is a buffet choice — beef pot roast with gravy, coleslaw and house salad; or chicken Marsala with green beans and house salads. The cost is $15 per person, which includes food, beverage, pastries, tip and tax. The cost must be paid by check payable to Green Mill, or by exact amount of cash at event. Beverage and assorted pastries are included.
Last year’s attendees will be called. New registrations and anyone with questions should call Geno Halberg at 651-437-7878.
For years, Hastings State Hospital was home to many people with serious mental health issues. It was almost a community in and of itself, set apart from the Hastings community by a bridge on 10th Street and a lower entrance which became better known as the road to the casino.
The hospital, with its main building and separate cottages, also was the place at which many men and women worked. In the late 1970s, that ended with the hospital closing and the state converting the campus into a Veterans Home. It continues operations today.
