Theft arrest leads to drug charges
A 36-year-old Hastings man faces two counts of controlled substance crime in the fifth degree and one count of theft following an Aug. 30 incident in Hastings.
According to the criminal complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney's office, a Hastings Police officer observed two males on foot at about 4:30 a.m. Aug. 30. The officer observed Joshua Paul Schaffer take a bicycle from a backyard and ride away on it. The officer alerted another officer who intercepted Schaffer and placed him under arrest.
In a search of Schaffer, the officer found a pack of cigarettes with one cigarette missing. He opened the pack and saw that in the bottom where the missing cigarette would have been was a pill and a plastic bag. The officer found suspected methamphetamine in the bag.
Testing confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in the substance in the bag and the presence of methylphenidate in the pill.
