Tennis prepares to take on city waste service
Hastings residents will start to see Tennis Sanitation carts soon. Tennis, which won the city's residential solid waste contract, will replace Waste Management as of Jan. 1.
Preparations for the shift in service are already under way. Tennis has been working out details with the city since it won the contract in early October. One of the requirements of the contract was that the company has to have a yard waste pickup site in Hastings. The Hastings Bus Company has agreed to let Tennis use part of its land for the compost site. The entrance will be off of Commerce Drive, and the hours will be the same as Waste Management's site.
Residents will start to see new waste and recycling containers starting in December. Tennis plans to drop off containers over the first three weeks of December, co-owner Willie Tennis told the city council Nov. 26. Waste Management is planning to pick up its containers from residents' homes in the last week of December, so residents may end up with both Tennis and Waste Management containers for a short time. Although the containers will be distributed, Tennis won't begin its service until January.
The council raised a question about Christmas tree pickup after the holidays. Tennis said they will pick up Christmas trees left with other waste on any regular pickup day after the first of the year.
The recycling features were again highlighted at the council meeting. Tennis picks up recycling every week and residents will be given a 65-gallon recycling cart. If that's not big enough, Tennis will upgrade it.
A letter is scheduled to be sent to residents Dec. 3 detailing the changes.
