Tennis: Great season ends for Raiders
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

Hastings boys tennis coach Mick Willette put it like this: "All good things come to an end, I guess."

The good thing Willette referred to last week was the season the Raiders had. It certainly was a strong one.

Hastings finished with a 12-4 overall record, and a second-place finish in the Suburban East Conference. The Raiders earned the first seed in the north sub-section, and started the section tournament with a win.

Then came the second round. Hastings lost in the second round to a good team from Rochester Century, 1-6.

Willette made some major changes to the Hastings lineup with the hopes that the Raiders would win at third singles and fourth singles, and then get a couple wins at doubles. It almost worked.

Hastings got one win in singles and then lost three three-set matches.

The match couldn't have been much closer.

Here's how it all shook out:

• Mike Lund lost at first singles, 1-6, 1-6;

• Adam Ernst lost at second singles, 1-6, 2-6;

• Non Wiwatwongthorn won at third singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1;

• Ben Carlson lost at fourth singles, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6;

• In doubles play, Jake Langeslay and Brett Peterson lost 3-6, 6-4, 4-6;

• Josh Houska and Matt Lund lost at second doubles, 6-4, 6-7, 4-6; and

• At third doubles, Lars Schauerhammer and Elliot Siebenaler lost at third doubles, 2-6, 3-6.

"(Mixing up the lineup) was our only chance to win the match," Willette said. "I felt like we prepared well, strategized well and the guys competed hard. We felt like we did everything we could."

Still, the strong team season wasn't lost on Willette.

"We feel really good about the season," Willette said. "Winning that match against Century would have just made it an all-time kind of season. It would have been phenomenal."
