Some veterans are honored with ceremonies and memorials. This weekend, four local golf courses will honor all military veterans and their families by helping them relax and enjoy a day on the greens.

Tee it Up for the Troops begins Sept. 10, the National Day of Golf for the Troops, and continues through Sept. 12. Soldiers will be able to golf for free at the Hidden Greens, Bellwood Oaks, Emerald Greens and Afton Alps golf courses. Immediate family members are being offered a half-price rate those days. Military IDs are required, and golf carts are not included in the discount.

"We've got vets who like to play golf," said Emerald Greens manager Mike O'Rourke. "It's a way for them to get out and golf for a really cheap rate."

This is the second year that Hastings courses have participated in Tee it Up for the Troops. Emerald Greens decided to participate in part because the owner is a veteran himself, O'Rourke said.

"He has a warm spot in his heart for veterans and military people."

The event isn't just for military personnel and their families. All golfers are invited to play. The courses will request a minimum $1 donation for each green fee they process from non-military golfers, and the donations will be used to support troops and their families through Tee it Up for the Troops.

"Tee It Up for the Troops is a Minnesota based non-profit organization where 95 percent of the proceeds goes back to the military and their families," said Lisa Swanson of Nicolai Avenue Marketing, "whether it may be money for artificial limbs, special clothing for wounded soldiers, who have artificial limbs, or as simple as a back pack for one of their children going back to school."

Last year, about 200 golfers showed up to the Hastings courses. Tee it Up for the Troops raised about $400.

For a little extra celebration, Hidden Greens is hosting a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon cookout from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The cookout is open to anyone who wants to show their thanks and appreciation to the troops, Swanson said.

Golfers who want to participate just need to call one of the courses and set up a tee time.
