TechCenter isn’t a new business. It’s been around since 2002, when owners Kevin Bauer, John Phelps and Dan Poole were caught up in Panasonic’s decision to eliminate its Bloomington service center.

Although they were cut out of the Panasonic company, they were able to keep working as independent factory authorized technicians and their business, TechCenter, was born. The business is authorized to repair electronics manufactured by Panasonic, Samsung, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu. The majority of the work is large television repairs.

Until just recently, TechCenter kept the Bloomington location. But as of April 1, the business joined the Hastings business community, relocating into a vacant space right along Vermillion Street, north of 14th Street.

The Bloomington facility was a large one, Bauer explained. When Panasonic had owned it, technicians had to be able to handle and store large electronics shipped to the factory service center, he said, and they needed the 9,200 square feet for warehouse space.

But business has changed since then. Electronics have become more disposable and people aren’t sending their items in for repairs anymore.

“That type of work has gone away,” Bauer said.

Instead, most of their work these days is out in the field – repairs done in their customers’ homes.

“We work out of the van,” Bauer said, so there’s no more need for the warehouse.

Hastings offered the business a smaller office space, as well as a more central location for the three owners. Bauer is a Hastings resident and has lived here since 1985. Phelps lives in Woodbury and Poole lives in Rosemount.

Most of TechCenter’s work is warranty work, so they largely deal with the manufacturers for which they’re authorized and extended warranty companies. But they also take walk-ins at their office and handle non-warranty repairs for those brands.

The three owners bring a wealth of electronic repair experience to Hastings. Between the three of them, they have more than 90 years of experience, Bauer said. The least senior of them, he said he has about 20 years of experience himself.

For more information, contact TechCenter at 952-854-8624 or 952-854-9159. Bauer said they kept the Bloomington phone numbers because they’re already well known, but calls will arrive at the Hastings office. People can also contact the business by email at info@mntechcenter.com or stop in the office, located at 1310 Vermillion Street. The website is mntechcenter.com.
