The Superior Hiking Trail is a 205-mile long footpath that runs along the north shore of Lake Superior from Two Harbors, Minn., to the Canadian border.

The SHT runs through several popular tourist destinations such at Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse and Tettegouche State Park.

Other popular spots only accessible by the SHT include Bean and Bear lakes and Mount Trudee. Majestic views of Lake Superior as well as many other lakes, rivers and forest land can be found all along the route.

There are 81 back country camp sites which make backpacking the trail just as viable as day hiking. Fall is an especially busy time for the trail as many hike out to see the fall colors of the northern hardwood and boreal forest.

Officially opened in July 1987, the trail was built with the help of grants from the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources.

Currently the SHT is expanded and maintained solely with the help of donations and volunteers.
