Strawberry field day is at Sam Kedem Nursery
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is having a field day in Hastings for strawberries.
This free, on-farm field day highlights research into new methods of growing strawberries. It is the culmination of a three-year research project by strawberry grower Sam Kedem, who received a MDA Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration grant to study the feasibility of growing day-neutral strawberries organically.
Kedem's research involves comparing berries grown in plastic with those grown in straw mulch and comparing ribbon rows with single rows. He's also comparing four different varieties: Seascape, Tribute, Albion and Evie-2. This year, he's grown some of his berries in high tunnels with excellent results.
The field day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Sam Kedem Nursery and Garden, 12414 191st St. E., south of Hastings.
A $5 donation toward lunch is appreciated. For more information, contact Kedem at 651-437-7516 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
