Hastings Middle School student Leah Steding had a close call at the state geography bee on Friday in St. Cloud.

Steding, just one of 100 students from across the state to advance to the state level, nearly qualified for the top 10.

Each of the 100 students in St. Cloud was given eight questions to answer. The goal was to narrow down the field to the top 10.

Steding got just one of the eight questions wrong. There were 11 students, though, who got them all right, and she did not advance.

“The sad part was that she knew the right answer to the question that she got wrong,” said her father, Matt. “She didn’t trust her first instinct, but Leah made her original goal of winning the school competition, so the opportunity to compete at state was just icing on the cake for her.

“(Her mother) Mary and I are very proud of her.”
