St. Elizabeth Ann Seton school band continues going strong
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School (SEAS) band program continues to be strong.
SEAS School has two bands, a fifth-grade band and a middle school sixth- to eighth-grade band. The fifth-grade band program has 24 of 32 students in that grade participating, as well as two students from St. John's in Vermillion.
The sixth- to eighth-grade combined grade band has 50 members, which is half of the student body. Students receive a 15-minute lesson either individually or with one other person once a week, as well as group band rehearsal twice a week before school.
Students are highlighted by performing at weekly Mass, Christmas caroling, small concerts for school, demonstrating instruments to the younger elementary, performing at the fish fry and the alumni breakfast.
The bands perform three evening concerts throughout the year. Dec. 6 was the Christmas concert. On Feb. 23 they will join with the Hastings High School Jazz Ensemble and another is planned for May 15. The middle school band has also attended the Lake City Middle School band festival for the last two years and will be attending again this year. This festival allows band members to perform in front of other students, and to work with a clinician. It also gives them a chance to hear other bands their age and size. SEAS students are also represented at two honor band festivals throughout the year. Students are nominated and selected to perform with students from all over the state.
Band director Emily Chandler said the SEAS band program continues to be successful from the generosity of many monetary donations and donations of new and used instruments.
"It is through this generosity that many students are able to participate in our wonderful band program," she said. "We want to say thank you to the many donors who continue to make our school band program a success." The school is currently looking for a donation of a trombone.
