Ronald Mann is accused of murdering his 74-year-old father, Ivan Mann, whose body was found on Friday in a wooded area near his home in Wilkinson Township.

According to the criminal complaint, Ronald Mann killed his father following an argument. An autopsy determined that Ivan Mann's death was caused by manual strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head, the complaint stated.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office first began looking for Ivan Mann Aug. 22, when a woman reported that she had not seen him for more than a week, the complaint stated. When deputies went to check on Ivan Mann, they spoke with Ronald Mann, who initially said he had last seen his father at 11 p.m. Aug. 21 and he was fine, the complaint stated.

Ivan Mann's property contains at least two buildings. Ivan Mann lived in one building and Ronald Mann lived in another, the complaint stated.

A deputy accompanied Ronald Mann into Ivan Mann's residence, where he noted the presence of an oxygen tank that Ivan Mann regularly used, the complaint stated.

An investigator spoke with a neighbor, who also was concerned about Ivan Mann's well-being, the complaint stated. The investigator also had information from 2003 in which Ivan Mann expressed concern for his safety with Ronald Mann, the complaint stated.

The neighbor told the investigator that he went to Ivan Mann's residence at about 12:20 p.m. Aug. 22 and Ronald Mann told him his father was inside on his nebulizer and it would be about 30 minutes before he was done, the complaint stated.

After some time, Ronald Mann went inside by himself and returned, telling the neighbor that his father was asleep and he could not come inside, the complaint stated.

At about 1:45 p.m. sheriff's deputies forced entry into the home and found no one inside, the complaint stated. They found a cane, a portable oxygen tank and pill reminders that indicated Ivan Mann had taken his medication on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20, but not since, the complaint stated.

A search warrant was executed on Aug. 22 and law enforcement found blood splatter on the walls and floor in Ivan and Ronald Mann's residences, the complaint stated. Blood-covered clothing also was found in the wood-burning stove in Ivan Mann's home, the complaint stated. A pair of blue jeans and a sheet that also had blood on them were recovered, along with laundry detergent and bleach, the complaint stated.

On Aug. 23, another search warrant was executed, the complaint stated, and Ronald Mann was found walking out of the woods near his home.

He told police he had gotten lost in the woods, the complaint stated. "He appeared very nervous at the time," the complaint stated. A firearm was found inside his home, and Ronald Mann was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm due to a 2003 felony drug offense, the complaint stated.

Later, Ronald Mann told investigators that he had found Ivan Mann lying dead on the floor and attempted CPR but was unsuccessful, and he had panicked and disposed of the body, the complaint stated.

On Aug. 24, Ronald Mann told investigators where Ivan Mann's body was buried, the complaint stated. He said he had gotten into an argument with his father and struck him with a bloody towel, the complaint stated.
