Shoplifting arrest leads to drug charge
A 21-year-old Hastings man has been charged with one count of controlled substance crime in the fifth degree, one count of shoplifting, and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
The charges were filed after Andrew Bruce Fredline was arrested for shoplifting Oct. 31 at an Eagan store. A subsequent search of the vehicle he was in located a backpack. It contained what appeared to be a crack pipe.
According to the criminal complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney's office, Fredline apparently had taken some shoes off a shelf and put them on. He then replaced the shoes in the box with his older shoes and left the store without paying for them.
When officers located the vehicle he came in with his friends, they requested a K-9 sniff and the dog alerted them to the presence of narcotics. They found the backpack. Initially, Fredline denied he owned the backpack, but finally admitted it was his. He said he had smoked methamphetamine out of the pipe several days earlier. The pipe tested positive for methamphetamine.
