Sections loom for swimmers
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

For most swimmers on the Hastings boys team, this week was a welcome relief.

On Friday of last week, most of the members of the team began their tapering process to prepare for the section meet. That process brings with it a gradual reduction in the amount of swimming they do every day at practice.

It was a welcome relief for the members of the team, who have been hit hard with morning practices, afternoon practices and meets.

Now, just two meets remain on the schedule for the varsity swimmers -- the section meet, and the state meet.

Sections begins Thursday, Feb. 25, in Rochester. Finals are Saturday, Feb. 27.

"We look pretty good in a number of events leading into sections," Hastings coach Gerry Rupp said. "Colby Smith is the No. 1 returning swimmer in the 100 butterfly. Six of the top eight swimmers from last year graduated. And Elliot (Wilcox) will do well in his events."

Vs Forest Lake

Hastings closed out the regular season with a 93-75 win over Forest Lake on Thursday.

Hastings swam exhibition only in the final event after taking a 93-63 lead. Through the 200 freestyle, though, Hastings led just 73-51.

"They were a lot better team than I originally anticipated," Rupp said. "When I was making my lineup, I had to, basically, put together a stronger lineup than I had planned. I had to put together a pretty tough lineup. It's obviously nice to be prepared."

Wilcox had another sub-22 second time in the 50 freestyle.

"That's a very good time for him, considering the fact all the guys are really tired right now," Rupp said. "

Hayden Schmitt turned in season-best times in two events, the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Chris Humbert broke the one-minute-mark in the 100 freestyle and earned his best time.

Noah Schmitt had his personal best in the 50 freestyle at 27.42.
