Season ends for volleyball team despite valiant effort in Faribault
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

The first two games of Wednesday night's volleyball game between Hastings and Faribault was exactly what Hastings coach Rita Girgen wanted to see.

The Raiders, as she put it, came out "on fire."

Hastings won the first two sets of the match, 25-17 and 25-16.

"There was nothing that was going to hold us back," Girgen said. "Everything went right. All aspects of the game."

Everything that was going right for Hastings suddenly started to go wrong, though, and the momentum swung the other way.

"In the third set, there was just a momentum change," Girgen said. "Slowly, but surely, we were giving up some of our momentum and Faribault was definitely taking it. That was the biggest thing."

Hastings went on to lose three sets in a row, and Faribault escaped with a win. The final three games went 25-18, 25-17 and 15-9.

Girgen was thrilled with the efforts of her team, especially down the stretch this season.

"The way we finished against Forest Lake, Park and White Bear Lake, and even including the way we started against Faribault, was the season I was anticipating us to have from the get-go," she said. "It was exciting that was finished the season that way."

Hastings will lose two seniors to graduation from this year's team. They are Biancca DuFour and Grace Rolloff, and both leave big shoes behind.

"They both are perfect examples of what we want our student athletes to be like" Girgen said. "They're really good role models on and off the court. They are great students and great people. They are two people who have dedicated a lot of their time to the program, both in the offseason and during the season. If you were going to pick two kids to represent the program, those two are the two we'd pick."
