Season ends for Hastings boys hockey team with 3-2 loss to East Ridge
Three times this season, Hastings and East Ridge played in boys hockey.
Three times this season East Ridge won by one goal.
One of those losses, the one that came Thursday night, ended the season for the Raiders. Hastings fell to East Ridge, 3-2, in overtime in the first round of the section tournament.
"They just played better than we did," coach Russ Welch said. "They outshot us, 30-21. They had a little more jump in their skates that we did. We just couldn't get enough offense generated."
Hastings fell behind midway through the first period, 1-0.
In the second period, coming at 11:28, Joe Shingledecker scored for Hastings to tie the game. He was assisted by Jacob Cooper and Colin Shoen.
Just 20 seconds later, East Ridge scored to go back up, 2-1.
In the third period, with just two minutes left to play, Hastings got the game-tying goal from Mark Huneke, assisted by Bailey Siewert and Zach Mellick.
One minute into the overtime, East Ridge scored the game-winner.
"We had a good chance in the last two minutes to win it, and then we had a three-on-two in overtime," Welch said. "We had two or three opportunities to win the game, and so did they. Their third one happened to go in."
Matthew Radke played in goal for Hastings and made 27 saves on 30 shots.
"I thought Matt played very, very well," Welch said. "He gave us a chance to win."
Hastings finishes the season with a 13-12-1 record.
Five of those losses were by one goal.
Hastings finished 11-7 in Suburban East Conference play and placed third in the league behind Cretin and White Bear Lake.
"In the conference we are in, with how tough it is, it was a very good year for us conference-wise," Welch said. "Our non-conference season was OK."
Hastings will lose 10 seniors to graduation from this year's team.
"It's going to be difficult to replace them, especially from the defensive end of things," Welch said. "We will lose four of our top five defensemen. That'll be the biggest concern we have."
Seniors are Michael Barr, Matt Koch, Mellick, Jake Caneff, Adam Husting, Shingledecker, Andrew Bussey, Brandon Boogren, David McConnell and Siewert.
