SEAS first-grader Hudson Zieske wins coloring contest

When Hudson Zieske and his family went to see the Holiday Train stop at the depot in Hastings two weeks ago, he forgot to bring his coloring contest entry. A quick return trip home brought the entry back to the depot for judging.

It's good the Zieske family did just that.

Last week, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton first-grader won the contest and received his prize, a very big gift basket filled with goodies from Hastings Family Service.

Hudson's eyes lit up when the basket was delivered to his classroom Thursday morning. The surprise delivery was made by Hastings Community Education Youth Development Director Abby Beytein-Carlson, Hastings Family Service's Kelsey Matula, Hastings High School Youth First Planning Council's Taylor Wickberg and the Middle School Impact group's Amy Rowan.

"It was fun," said Hudson about the contest.

Any child in kindergarten through grade four throughout the city could compete. The picture showing the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train was to be colored as the child decided. Hudson's featured many different bright colors.

"We want to have the opportunity for the kids to have fun and be involved," said Beytein-Carlson.

"We want to get people to come to the train's show," said Matula.

The basket of goodies included a Candyland game, puzzles, coloring books, Christmas candies, a mug and teddy bears.
