Hastings' newest independent insurance agent isn't new to Hastings at all. He's Brian Schommer, a lifelong resident of Hastings and a 1985 graduate of HHS.

Last week, he opened Schommer Insurance at 2134 Vermillion St., adjacent to Gordy's Glass.

Schommer spent the last four and a half years at Country Insurance, working out of Cottage Grove. He's happy to be out on his own as an independent agent, saying he's now able to offer his clients more flexibility.

"There were a lot of circumstances that went into me going out on my own," Schommer said. "It just felt right. I'm not as handcuffed anymore. The independent agent does offer a lot more flexibility."

As an independent agent, Schommer said he is able to shop around for his clients to get them the best deal possible.

"We will go to bat for you," Schommer said.

Schommer is also eager to come to work in Hastings every day. The community obviously matters a lot to him - the office is colored in bright blue and gold, and is filled with images of Hastings. Schommer has been active in amateur baseball here for many years, and he serves on the Hastings Parks and Recreation Board. He thinks that community involvement will help him as he sets out on his own.

"We're about relationships and we're about community," Schommer said. "We don't want our clients to be our clients - we want them to be our friends. We want that old-fashioned, hometown feel."

Schommer Insurance can be reached by calling 319-0699.
