Schnell is pick to be Hastings' next police chief

If all goes as planned at next week's meeting of the Hastings City Council, the next Hastings Chief of Police will be Paul Schnell, the current public information officer at the St. Paul Police Department.

At a meeting early Tuesday at City Hall, the police civil service commission and the public safety committee agreed unanimously to recommend the appointment of Schnell.

The recommendation is now forwarded to Mayor Paul Hicks who "is supportive" of the nomination, according to Hastings city administrator Dave Osberg.

With Hicks' support, the recommendation will go to the Hastings city council, which meets Monday. It is expected they will confirm the hiring.

Rick Mathwig, one of the finalists, withdrew his name from consideration after being offered the job as the Roseville chief of police.

The third finalist was Wayne Hicks of the Hastings Police Department.
