"We thought it would be an appropriate time," said director of operations Tom Canfield.

The Salvation Army, he explained, employs a lot of veterans, and the holiday provides an opportunity to honor them through the store's opening.

"It's a good expression of our gratitude toward our vets and toward our country," he said.

The building, located at 1110 Vermillion St., next to Thrifty White Drug, is getting a considerable facelift. Formerly a grocery store, it's getting new walls, ceilings, flooring and paint inside. A back room is being retrofit so the Salvation Army has a place to process donations.

The building is currently getting a new asphalt roof. Patterson Construction will also put new facades on the front and side of the store, and a canopy will be constructed on the side of the building, "where folks can drive up and donate product," Canfield said.

Next to be done is the new asphalt parking lot.

Donations for the Hastings store are already being accepted and can be dropped off in the store's parking lot between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. As soon as the donation door on the building is completed, donations will be taken there.

"All we ask is that it's in gently used condition," Canfield said. "And we accept just about anything."

These donations will fill the store with all sorts of things, including clothes, household items, furniture, collectibles and antiques, seasonal items, books, media and electronics.

"It's going to be a really really nice store," Canfield said.

There are nine Salvation Army thrift stores in the metro area. Hastings' store will be the 10th, and it's expected to be the nicest store in the system, Canfield said.

"We're modeling this as our flagship store," he said.

The stores fund the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC), a program for men facing drug or alcohol addictions, homelessness, and other life problems.

"We hope to have a women's program soon," Canfield said.

ARC offers six months of rehabilitation, during which Salvation Army feds and houses the men, offers them spiritual resources and provides employment development opportunities. If needed, men can continue to live at the center for a year following the six-month program.

"All the proceeds from the thrift stores go to support the program," Canfield said.

The Salvation Army is looking to hire 18 people in various positions at the store. A job fair will be held in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 16 and Sept. 17. Prospective employees should bring their resumes, and applications will be available, as will the organization's human resources department.

"We'll pretty much be hiring people on the spot," Canfield said.
