Things couldn't have gone much better for the Hastings cross country team than they went Tuesday in Farmington.

The Hastings boys team placed second out of nine teams and the girls were third out of seven at the Trinity Invitational.


Trinity won the boys meet with 36 points. Hastings was second with 41.

The Raiders were led by Zack Benning, who won his first varsity race, finishing in 16 minutes and 49.3 seconds.

"He took off from the get-go and didn't look back," coach John Dewall said. "He led the whole way. It was real, real exciting."

Joe Rabaey was eighth in 18:25.3; Christian Weiland was ninth in 18:31.2; Austin Reuter was 11th in 18:32.5; Andy Rachuy was 12th in 18:33.5; Colby Smith was 16th in 19:13.0; and Jake Kelly was 17th in 19:16.3.

"These kids, all their times were really good, but Zack is pulling in to another league here," Dewall said. "He is definitely stepping it up. His workouts are top quality, as are everybody's, but he's taking it to a new level. His goal is to get to that state meet."

The girls, meanwhile, were led by first-year runner Michaela Mills, who was eighth in 16:09.8.

Kailee Harrington placed 12th in 16:50.4; Helen Jensen was 13th in 16:53.0; Bri Strandberg was 15th in 17:14.3; Kate Curtis was 18th in 17:26.1; Makaila England was 30th in 18:49.7; and Rachel Thomas was 31st in 18:58.5.

"The girls ran really, really well," Dewall said. "We're very pleased with how these kids are doing coming down the stretch here."

Red Wing

Hastinngs competed at the Red Wing invitational on Sept. 30.

The Hastings boys were fourth out of six teams with 94 points. Red Wing won the meet with 43 points. Woodbury was second (56) and Elk River was third (61).

Benning finished second in the race with a time of 16:22.58.

Rabaey was 12th in 17:37.16; Smith was 21st in 18:07.38; Reuter was 30th in 18:35.79; Weiland was 31st in 18:36.88; Kelly was 35th in 18:42.29; Ben Jackson was 39th in 18:45.83; Andy Rachuy was 46th in 19:18.29; Tim Zappa was 49th in 19:25.19; and Jake Rachuy was 54th in 19:55.61.

The girls were sixth out of seven teams. Roseville won the meet.

Mills led Hastings with an 18th-place finish. She had a time of 16:13.56.

Kiki Radke was 19th in 16:15.23; Strandberg was 21st in 16:19.53; Jensen was 30th in 16:42.65; Curtis was 38th in 16:55.62; Harrington was 48th in 17:36.25; England was 52nd in 18:08.26; Thomas was 55th in 18:32.42; Abberly Smith was 60th in 18:47.05; Nicole Froehling was 65th in 19:15.94.
