Rough placed 43rd at state meet
Hastings High School senior Mike Rough placed 43rd overall at the state cross country meet Saturday.
The meet was held at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Rough had a time of 16 minutes, 46.2 seconds on the course.
He went out strong with the lead pack and was in the top 10 through the first two miles.
"He went out with the leaders," Hastings coach John Dewall said. "He did what he needed to do. It was very, very exciting to have him up in the lead pack for two miles. To go out like that was really cool."
After those two miles, Rough started getting his heels stepped on and kicked by runners behind him, and that threw off his rhythm, he told Dewall.
Still, for Rough to just qualify for the state meet was no small feat.
He missed the first three weeks of the season with an injury.
"It's tough when you're three weeks behind like that," Dewall said. "It was remarkable that he got there, and then he went after it. We're very, very proud of him. He had a very good career for Hastings cross country. He had a great career, and he had a great state meet.
"We're real proud of him."
Hastings fans haven't seen the last of Rough just yet. He swims for the Raiders in the winter and runs track in the spring.
