Rosemary Ahern, 100
Rosemary Ahern, age 100, passed away Oct. 8, in Hastings, Minn.
She was born at home in Nininger Township. She was
the daughter of Edward D. Ahern and Johanna Conley Ahern. She attended District 24 School, in Nininger until 5th grade, then went to Guardian Angels School. She attended Hastings High School.
She went onto St. Joseph's School of Nursing where she got her RN diploma. After graduation she went to work in the VA system, which lead to a job in Chicago working with veterans suffering from mental illness. As World War II was building she volunteered to join the Army Nurse Corps. She did basic training in Colorado Springs. She was then assigned to O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Mo., on the plastic surgery service. She was assigned to the 200th General Hospital and spent time in Paris, Soisson, and Heidelberg. After the war, she joined the Reserve Corps. She retired from the Military with the rank of Captain.
She returned to St. Paul to help care for polio victims during the polio epidemic. She was recalled to active duty and was assigned to Walter Reed in Washington D.C., for seven years. Rosemary realized that prevention of disease was so important, so she enrolled in the University of MN - School of Public Health. After graduation she worked at Family Nursing Service/Ramsey County Nursing Service for 20 years.
Rosemary had a keen sense of humor. She loved to travel, golf, swim, play Bridge, and entertain friends and family. She continued her commitment to service as a dedicated long term volunteer for the Regina Auxiliary and American Red Cross. She was an advocate for education and personal responsibility. Rosemary had a deep personal faith and was a lifelong member of the Guardian Angels/St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton parish.
She is survived by nieces and nephews; her "daughterly niece", Kathy (Jim) Shurts of Madison, Wis., Mike (Heidi) Ahern Stevensville, Mich., Peggy Ahern La Crosse, Wis., Bill (Ann) Ahern of Mahtomedi, Minn., Neil (Sandy) Ahern Hastings, Minn., and Mary (Bob) Geyer White Bear Lake, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Paul, Walter, Arthur, and John and sister, Kathleen; nephews, Walter "Jay", Edward, and Lawrence "Larry" Ahern.
Rosemary will be missed by her family and friends and many other people whose lives she touched. Special thanks to Barb Nelson for all of her support and wisdom over the years, and the wonderful staff at Regina Senior Living.
A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Father Robert Altier, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Regina Memorial Chapel, 1175 Nininger Road in Hastings. Interment will follow at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Cemetery with Military Honors provided by VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Regina Auxiliary.
