Richardson named publisher of Star Gazette
The Hastings Star Gazette named Chad Richardson as its publisher this week.
“For 18 years, Chad has shown that he’s someone we can count on,” said Steve Messick, the director of Rivertown Multimedia, a division of Forum Communications. “His new title better reflects the responsibilities that he has acquired over the past few years.”
Richardson graduated from Moorhead State University in 1995 with a degree in mass communications with a concentration in photojournalism. He worked for a year at the Pope County Tribune in Glenwood and then got a job at the Star Gazette in 1996 as a photographer and sports editor.
In 1999, the company that owned the Star Gazette purchased the papers in Farmington and Rosemount and Richardson was named their general manager. He worked there until 2007.
He’s just the third publisher for the Star Gazette. The first was Mike O’Connor and the second was Messick.
In 1857, the newspaper got its start as the Hastings Independent. In 1866, it merged with the Hastings Conserver and became the Hastings Gazette.
Later, in 1969, the Mississippi Valley Star started and was in competition with the Gazette. In 1981, the Gazette was purchased by the Star and the newspaper was named the Hastings Star Gazette.
With its history dating back to 1857, the newspaper is one of the longest-running businesses in Hastings.
“It is a tremendous responsibility that I take seriously,” Richardson said. “I remember a series of stories I wrote on the historic homes of Hastings back in the late 1990s. During many of those interviews, the homeowners talked about how they felt they were caretakers of the home – they wanted to take great care of the homes to preserve them for generations to come. I feel the same sense of responsibility with the newspaper.”
Richardson was also named the publisher of the Woodbury Bulletin, the South Washington County Bulletin in Cottage Grove and the Farmington-Rosemount Independent Town Pages.
He lives in Hastings with his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Gabriel and Luciana.
