Reunion planning for HHS Class of 1994 takes multiple approaches
Ten years ago when the Hastings High School class of 1994 got to work planning its 10-year reunion, letters were mailed to classmates at their last known addresses.
This year, though, planning looks altogether different.
There’s a Facebook group, for starters, helping organizers stay in direct contact with many classmates. As the organizers have learned, though, not everyone is on Facebook. To that end, they planners have taken a low technology route, too. Ellen Bryon, the senior class president from the class of 1994, is the event’s chairperson and said she wants to make sure everyone gets invited.
“I guess I feel this obligation to at least make sure everyone is in the know,” she said. “You’d think it’s a lot easier in this digital age, but it takes a lot of different methods to get it done.“We have a tight-knit class full of some real characters. I know it will be a better party if there’s as many people there as possible. I don’t want someone to say, ‘I wish I had known about it. I would have gone.’”Old classmates who work in Hastings are being asked to spread the word to the parents and grandparents of class members.“Classmate Jessie Jablonske owns Dugarels – she’s telling folks about the reunion as they swing by for a drink,” Byron said. “Classmate Jenni Bauer mans the Cub deli counter and is sometimes affectionately referred to as the unofficial mayor of Hastings; we’ve kept her posted, too. We’ve got an announcement planned for the Todd Field sign as well. We’re hoping that these ‘low-tech’ methods will reach our classmates, their parents or even grandparents all to get the word out.”Making matters rather challenging for Byron is that she lives in New York. She’s leaned on a group of planners back in Hastings who have been helping out, including Rachael Fair.
