Renovated Veteran's Park baseball field to reopen Friday
Baseball players using the ball field at Veteran's Park in Hastings get a new surface to play on this year. This Friday, May 11, the field will hold a reopening ceremony to celebrate the field's renovation.
Last summer, Hastings resident Steve Foote won a contest at a Twins game that earned Hastings a $20,000 ball park improvement project. Part of the Chevrolet "Diamonds and Dreams" program, the project updated the Veteran's Park infield. It was stripped down and rebuilt with new aggregate and black dirt, new sod, new pitcher's rubber and an improved batter's box. The park's infield was in need of updating, having been built in 1982.
Friday's ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Director of Parks and Recreation Barry Bernstein will say a few words about how the renovation came about and talk about the award. A representative from Valley Chevrolet is also expected to speak.
The ceremony will be followed by a varsity baseball game. The Raiders will face off against Park at 7 p.m.
