Things are looking up for the Hastings High School volleyball team.

Hastings started its turnaround of sorts on Oct. 9 with a close loss to Forest Lake, a team that finished 4-4 in the Suburban East Conference this season. Hastings lost in five games to the Rangers, but coach Rita Girgen was pleased with what she saw from her team.

Then, two nights later, Girgen was especially encouraged by what she saw. Hastings beat Park in three games. The win was the first SEC victory of the season for Hastings.

"The girls came out right from the start, executing all the small things we preach all the time," Girgen said. "They played really well. They had really good energy. They kept up that momentum from that Forest Lake game. They had more fire and energy than we've had all season. They just played really well."

Girgen was able to get every play on the court, something that made everyone happy.

"Our starters really stepped up and took care of business so that everybody could get on the varsity court," she said.

Biancca DuFour led Hastings in many statistical categories against Park. She had 18 kills nine digs and three block assists for the team.

"She had a really good match," Girgen said.

In addition, Kaylyn Nicklay had a strong match, according to Girgen.

"We liked everything about her game that night," Girgen said. "She executed really well. We liked her decision making and her defense. She looked really good."

The section tournament is next for the Raiders, who expect to begin play on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
