Raiders' upset of Lakeville South falls just short
The season came to an end for the Hastings boys tennis team with in the second round of the Section 1AA playoffs.
Coming off a 4-3 win over Winona in the opening round, Hastings had its tables turned, falling 4-3 to Lakeville South in round two, held Thursday, May 16, at Lakeville South High School.
Though fifth-seeded Hastings won all three doubles matches, No. 1-seeded Lakeville South swept singles play to avoid the upset and earn the home-court victory.
"We gave them our best shot, but we just came up a little short," Hastings head coach Mick Willette said. "It was a great competitive match with a great tennis atmosphere."
For Hastings, sophomores Austin Houska and Craig Nielson won 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 at first doubles, while senior Cody Arndtson and junior Alex Zuzek won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles and junior Ben Klimek and sophomore Carson Whyle earned a straight-set win 7-5, 6-1 at third doubles. Lakeville won the top three singles matches in straight sets. The last match to be decided was the fourth singles match between Hastings' Danny Steiner and Lakeville's Trevor Tatge. Tatge won the three-setter 6-3, 3-6, 3-6.
"Every point was cheered of the final set at four singles as Steiner and Tatge battled it out to decide the match," Willette said.
Lakeville South advanced, but was upset in the next round 5-2 by second-seeded Rochester Century.
The match ended Hastings' team portion of the 2013 season. The Raiders finished 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the Suburban East Conference. Next, six players will compete for Hastings in the Section 1AA individual tournament. Action starts Thursday, May 23, at Lakeville South High School.
