The Hastings swimming and diving team had high hopes coming into last week's Suburban East Conference showdown against the Stillwater Ponies.

In the end, coaches knew it would come down to one thing - depth. And, in looking simply at the deck of the pool, one could tell Stillwater had the definite advantage. Stillwater swimmers outnumbered Hastings swimmers 2-to-1, and that depth helped propel the Ponies to a 96-88 win over the Raiders.

Hastings won half of the races and kept it close for most of the match. At the diving break, the score was tied 31-31.

The Ponies went 1-2-3 in diving, but Hastings picked up a few points with Britta Johnson and Jorey Molitor placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Back in the pool after diving, Stillwater got busy building a lead. By the time for the meet's last event to start, the Ponies built an insurmountable 96-76 lead.

The swimmer of the meet for Hastings was Allissa Smith.

"She had all four amazing swims," coach Katie McAlpin said. "She made state cuts in both of her individual events. Allissa has also been diving. She didn't dive at this meet because we needed her to swim, but she will be diving at most of our other meets."

Results from the meet went like this:
