The best news from the meet was that Hastings qualified athletes in eight events for this weekend’s state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.

State meet qualifiers

Here’s information on the state meet qualifiers from Hastings.

HHS sophomore Alex Poncelet will compete in the 200 meter dash. His seed time of 23.07 puts him as a long-shot to advance to finals.

The top time is held by Karl Olsen of Bloomington Jefferson, who has a time of 21.89.

Zack Benning has one of the top times in the 1,600 meter run. He finished in 4:13.86, and the top time is held by Joe Klecker of Hopkins in 4:12.61. Benning’s time is a school record.

Benning also qualified in the 3,200 with a time of 9:24.96. The top time is held by Klecker in 9:06.62. Benning went 20 seconds faster than this year’s seeding time at last year’s state meet, so expect to see him move up in that race.

HHS sophomore Clayton Johnson qualified in the 110 hurdles. He had a time of 15.73. The top time is held by Matt Baker of Mounds View in 14.53.

Johnson also qualified in the 300 hurdles and he has one of the top times in that event of 38.77. The fastest time is held by Davis Eldridge of Eden Prairie in 38.64.

The 4x400 relay team from Hastings qualified with a time of 3:24.71. The team was made up of three sophomores – Kannon O’Brien, Mark Vaith and Clayton Johnson – and one senior, Benning.

The top qualifier is Wayzata in 3:19.65.

Wes Evansen has the top height in the pole vault with a seeding mark of 15-1. He is a senior and set a school record.

Calvin Deike has a seeding mark of 14-6 and two vaulters come in at 14-0.

Evansen also qualified in the long jump with a leap of 21-1.75.

Akeem Sirleaf of North has the best jump heading into the state meet at 22-8.75.
