Raiders pole vaulters shine at Park meet
The Hastings boys and girls track teams tuned up for the Suburban East Conference and Section 3AA championship meets at Park's "Last Chance" quadrangular on Friday, May 17, in Cottage Grove.
Overall, the Hastings boys took second place with 66.66 points and the Hastings girls took fourth place with 38.83 points in the four-team meet. The Woodbury boys and girls won the meet with 112.833 points and 104.5 points, respectively.
In the boys meet, Hastings dominated the pole vault, taking first through fourth. Wes Evansen won the event, clearing 13 feet, 6 inches. Jake Spitzack (12-4), Bryan Rachuy (11-3) and Andy Rachuy (11-2) were second, third and fourth, respectively. Also, Hastings' James Harper and Jonah Schill tied for fifth as the Raiders scored big in the event.
Hastings also was strong in the 800-meter run. The Raiders' Zack Benning won the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 57.64 - just ahead of his teammate, Joseph Rabaey, who had a time of 1:58.46. Also, Hastings' Matthew Woolery placed fourth in the event (2:03.54) and the Raiders' Jesse Green, Brendan McCabe and Alex Kane took sixth through eighth, respectively.
In other individual events: Clayton Johnson placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.16 seconds), Hastings' Mark Vaith, Garret Arndt and Mason Minnick finished in third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash with times of 53.98, 56.14 and 57.07, Hastings' Christian Weiland earned second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:56.52 and Jake Kelly took third in the discus throw with a heave of 114 feet, 3 inches. The Raiders' top relay was turned in by the 800-meter relay team, who won the event with a time of 1:35.40.
Like the boys, the Hastings girls were strongest in the pole vault. Hastings' Alissa Smith cleared 9 feet, 5 inches to win the event. Maria Zappa and Josie Pechous tied for fourth and Cassandra Hodgson was sixth in the event.
In other field events, Hastings' Nicole Hollar placed third in the high jump, going over 4 feet, 8 inches, Bailey Clothier earned fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-2 and Hollar and Clothier took third and fourth in the triple jump, respectively, with marks of 31-3 and 30-2. Hannah Martin was among the top in both the throwing events, taking second in the discus with a toss of 96 feet, 3 inches and second in the shot put with a heave of 31 feet, 4 inches.
On the track, Brianna Weatherly placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 4.28 seconds, Quinn Myers earned fourth place in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:09.04, Clothier took fifth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.75 seconds and Sierra Dokken earned sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.34.
The Hastings girls track also competed at the Memorial Invitational at Duluth Denfeld recently. The Raiders placed second out of 11 teams. Duluth East won the meet with 134 points. Hastings had 128.
