Raiders kick off season with 7-0 win
Bright skies. Temps in the mid-40s. Just a little breeze. For April tennis here in Minnesota, that's about as good as it gets.
The result, though, was even better than the weather.
In the season opener for the Hastings boys tennis team, the Raiders cruised to a 7-0 win over Rosemount.
"Each year, you never know exactly what you have," HHS coach Mick Willette said. "I was feeling confident, and I didn't think we'd lose, but I didn't anticipate us winning 7-0. We were dominant at every spot.
"It was a good start to the year."
At first singles, Hastings senior Mike Lund cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Last season, Lund spent the majority of his season at third singles.
"Mike made some good steps forward this year, as far as trying to be more consistent," Willette said. "Talent-wise, he just overwhelmed the Rosemount kid. As the year goes on, to continue to have that kind of success, he'll have to play smarter tennis."
Lund relied on a powerful first serve that scored him a number of points in the match. New this year for Lund is a better second serve, for those cases when he doesn't get the more powerful first serve in.

Non Wiwatwongthorn, a foreign exchange student at HHS, won at second singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Ben Carlson, a freshman, won at third singles 6-0, 6-1.
Matt Lund, a sophomore, won at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play, the new team of Josh Houska and Adam Ernst debuted with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win.
Brett Peterson and Jake Langeslay won 6-4, 6-1.
At third doubles, Lars Schauerhammer, another foreign exchange student, teamed up with Charlie Carpenter for a nice 6-0, 6-4 win.
In exhibition action, Chase Kasel won his singles match, 6-2, while the doubles team of Elliot Siebenaler and Tom Moynihan had little trouble, winning 6-0.
It was a different story for Hastings on Monday in a dual meet against another Lake Conference opponent - Eagan.
The Wildcats beat Hastings, 6-1.
The lone Hastings win came at first doubles, as Ernst and Houska won 6-2, 6-2.
Mike Lund lost at first singles, 2-6, 0-6.
Wiwatwongthorn lost 4-6, 4-6.
Carlson lost 1-6, 1-6 and at fourth singles, Matt Lund lost 2-6, 2-6.
Carpenter lost an exhibition singles match, 1-6.
At second doubles, Peterson and Langeslay lost 3-6, 1-3.
At third doubles, the team of Schauerhammer and Kasel fell 1-6, 0-6.
The Suburban East Conference season begins for Hastings April 14 with a match against Cretin-Derham Hall.
