Raiders go 2-2 at volleyball tournament in Apple Valley

Email

With heavy hearts, the Hastings High School volleyball team took the court over the weekend to play what had to be four very difficult matches at a tournament in Apple Valley. The team was shaken by the death of a 16-year-old classmate on Thursday night.

"We had emotions all over the place," coach Rita Girgen said. "Considering the situation, I was really happy and impressed with how they handled themselves."

In the tournament's first round, Hastings lost to Apple Valley. The silver lining, though, was that Hastings was able to win a game from the Eagles in a 2-1 loss.

"We haven't taken a game from Apple Valley since I have been coaching," Girgen said.

Hastings won the first game, 25-22, before losing the next two, 25-20 and 15-10.

In the second match of the tournament, Hastings beat Virginia, 25-21 and 25-14.

Hastings beat Centennial in the third round, 25-23 and 25-18.

In the final round, Hastings lost to Minneapolis Southwest, 25-13 and 25-17.

"Our communication was really strong during that tournament," Girgen said. "We eliminated unforced errors and made smart plays. We really kept ourselves in the games by just playing a smarter game in general."

Hastings has a 3-6 record at this point of the season.

"Our biggest thing is trying to find consistency," Girgen said. "When everybody is on, we're really good, but when we have a player or two who is struggling a little bit, we need to find a quicker way to recover from that.

"I like the tempo we are playing at, and where we are going with things. We just need to start cleaning up our game and start doing the little things. Those little things will help us get some victories."
