Raiders fall to Rangers in five sets
Tuesday night was one of the highlights of the Hastings girls volleyball season. The team ended up losing in five sets to Forest Lake, but they played one of their best matches of the season and raised money to fight cancer in the process.
Tuesday was the Dig Pink fundraising game for the team. They sold shirts and worked hard to get sponsorships as part of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Coach Rita Girgen said the final totals haven't been calculated yet, but she said she was certain the team hit its goal of raising $2,500, which is donated to the Side-Out Foundation.
"It was a huge success," Girgen said. "The support we had from the community was great."
Girgen thanked the several sponsors who contributed to the cause, too.
On the court, Girgen was encouraged by what she saw.
"The girls played really well," she said. "They really played together as one. That's something we've been trying to work on. What a great thing to start doing that as we head into the end of our season."
Hastings lost the first two games, 25-19, 25-15. The Raiders then stormed back to win the next two, 27-25 and 25-23.
In the fifth and deciding game, Hastings lost 15-8.
"The girls just played so much better than they have been," Girgen said. "Everybody was on. Everybody showed up and we played from start to finish. It was good to see it all come together."
Hastings plays at Park on Thursday night in the regular season finale.
