Raiders earn big postseason awards

Email

A number of postseason awards have come the way of the Hastings boys soccer team in recent weeks.

The team should learn this week it was selected for the second straight season as a winner in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America academic award. The team had a grade-point-average this year of 3.56.

The team also won the Class AA boys silver award, one of just three teams in the state to get that award.

"The team GPAs are quite impressive," coach Shane Lanning said.

In addition, assistant coach Tom Brenny has picked up a few nice awards recently. He was nominated for and won the Section 3AA assistant coach of the year. That qualified him for the statewide competition, and he won that, too.

"He has been so pivotal for us," Lanning said. "We don't necessarily have a ton of wins to talk about, but the wins that are achieving and the success we are achieving, a lot of that is coming from him. He's investing a lot of his time and energy as a ninth-grade coach."

Brenny has worked hard in the winter futsal program. He coaches two youth teams in the HFC United program.

"He's brought both of those teams to a high level of soccer," Lanning said. "He's got parents motivated and he's got players motivated."

More awards

Players Alex Lewanski and Nate Strauss each earned Section academic awards.

Keegan McIntosh earned a spot on the Section 3AA all-tournament team.

Alex Melecio earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association "senior excellence" award.

"He's the embodiment of a senior athlete who covers everything you are looking for," Lanning said. "He's a good player, a good student, a good person and he gives back to the program. He was a natural choice for the award."
