The Hastings boys baseball team snapped a tough string of close losses with a close win last week. Hastings beat Mounds View, 2-1. Earlier in the week, Hastings lost to Stillwater. The Raiders finished league play with a 3-15 record.

The section tournament, offering the team a fresh start, most likely begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Red Wing.

Coach Paul Hartmann has high hopes for the team, even though it has struggled in conference play.

"This group has a chance to surprise some teams in the playoffs," Hartmann said.

Vs Stillwater

Hastings lost to Stillwater on Wednesday, May 16, 3-2. The Ponies finished second in the SEC this season.

Stillwater scored single runs in the first and second innings to go up 2-0. Hastings countered with two runs in the third inning to tie the game. Jared Powell had the key hit, scoring both runs.

In the sixth inning, though, Stillwater added another run and Hastings couldn't counter in the top of the seventh.

Anders Hillstrom had two hits and a run scored for Hastings. Aaron Stoneberg had a hit and a run. Also getting hits were Matt Koch, Nate Flynn, Sam Schoeberl and Andrew Bussey.

Zach Anderson pitched for Hastings. He threw six innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

"We played a very clean game in Stillwater," Hartmann said. "Zach settled down after the first couple innings and, like he has all year, gave us a chance to win. We battled back very nicely and I thought our guys competed hard."

Vs Mounds View

Hastings beat Mounds View, 2-1, on Friday, May 18. It was senior night for Hastings.

Again, it was Powell who had the big hit, blasting a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Hastings the lead, 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, Mounds View began a rally of its own, but Joe Stark came up big, making the play of the game defensively, Hartmann said.

Stoneberg got the win on the mound, pitching seven innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run. He struck out 10 and walked one.

"Aaron was outstanding on the mound - he seemed to mix and match very well against a very good hitting team," Hartmann said.

Vs Red Wing

Hastings lost to Red Wing on Monday, 9-1.

"The score was not indicative of the game we played," Hartmann said. "It was tight throughout. It just got away from us late. We had some chances in the middle innings, but we were not able to capitalize."
