Raiders advance two swims to finals

The bright spot for the Hastings girls swimming team came in the form of Brina Kari on Tuesday night.

Kari, an HHS junior, finished with the fourth-fastest time in the 100 backstroke finals at the University of Minnesota.


She is assured of all-state honors, which are bestowed upon the top eight racers in each event. Finals were Wednesday night. Results were not available at press time.

Kari had a time of 57.51 seconds at the section finals two weeks ago. She improved that time to 56.94. The top time is held by Zoe Avestruz of Chanhassen, who had a time in prelimsof 54.06.

• 200 medley relay: The 200 medley relay team of Brina Kari, Abbie Gjelhaug, Kelly Leonard and Allissa Smith just missed a chance to qualify for finals.

The Raiders placed 18th. The top 16 teams qualify for finals.

Hastings finished with a time of 1:50.63. The No. 16th-ranked team finished in 1:50.42.

Hastings had a time of 1:48.97 at the section meet two weeks ago.

• 200 freestyle: Gjelhaug placed 31st in the 200 freestyle. She had a time of 1:59.65.

Her time at the section championships was 1:56.91.

• 100 butterfly: Allissa Smith had a great swim in the 100 butterfly prelims, but she was disqualified because she touched the finish line wall with one hand instead of two hands.

• 500 freestyle: Gjelhaug placed 20th in the 500 freestyle for Hastings. She had a time of 5:14.70 in prelims.

She was about two seconds away from racing in the finals on Wednesday.

• 100 backstroke: In addition to Kari, Hastings had Kelly Leonard racing in the 100 backstroke. She finished 25th.

The HHS freshman had a time in prelims of 1:00.40.

• 400 freestyle relay: The 400 freestyle relay team from Hastings had a strong night, placing 12th and earning a trip to the finals.

The team was made up of Kari, Morgan McCullough, Grace Hausman and Smith. They had a time of 3:36.85, an improvement over their section finals time of 3:36.90.

All the members of the team are underclassmen.

Kari and McCullough are juniors; Smith is a sophomore; Hausman is an eighth-grader.
