Raider boys win two more
Two more Suburban East Conference wins were tacked on this week by the Hastings boys hockey team.
The Raiders have now won six of their last seven games and three in a row.
In an 8-3 win over Woodbury on Feb. 12, the story of the night was Nate Flynn.
He had one goal and six assists for the Raiders.
"He was on fire," coach Russ Welch said. "He was hitting everybody with great passes. He was making some great plays."
Austin Nelson had three goals for the Raiders, earning himself yet another hat trick. Andrew Lindberg had two goals. Also scoring were Flynn, Zach Mellick and Jake Siewert.
Recording assists in addition to Flynn were Nelson (2), Mellick, Adam Fox, Tate Sykes, Matt Koch, and Nick Heumoeller.
Hastings took a 3-0 lead after one period. Woodbury added a goal, then Hastings scored five straight to go up 8-1.
P. J. Piotrowski played in goal for the Raiders. He made 15 saves on 18 shots.
Connor Thomas is still recovering from a groin pull.
Hastings beat Park on Feb. 10, 4-3.
Hastings scored three second-period goals to take the lead for good.
Piotrowski got the win in goal for Hastings. He made 23 saves.
Flynn had another strong game with two goals for the Raiders.
Also scoring were Austin Nelson and Andrew Lindberg.
Recording assists were Matt Koch, Joey Lodermeier, Flynn, Nelson (2) and Zach Mellick.
Welch was concerned about the game going into it, and his concerns proved to be well-founded.
Hastings had a 4-1 lead in the second period, but Park added a late goal in the second and another in the third to trim the lead to just one score.
"We hung on at the end," Welch said. "I give Park a lot of credit. They didn't quit. They kept coming at us. We just couldn't shake them."
Lindberg's offensive output had Welch excited. He's a defenseman.
"He had a really good week," Welch said.
The section seeding meeting is planned for Sunday, and the first round of games will be Thursday, Feb. 24.
