Rachel Weber knows her countries, states, rivers and lakes, and how they are connected to each other.

That knowledge served her well last Friday when she won the annual St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School Geography Bee.

"I'm happy," the eighth-grader said. "Our seventh grade geography class really helped, but other than that, I didn't do much preparing."

In preparation for the final competition, Rachel and the other sixth- to eighth-grade students took a 25-question written test. Rachel ranked near the top. The 10 finalists in this contest included Weber, Dob Kintz, Jakob Erredge, Ryan Klein, Anna Siebenaler, Dominic Tapella-Nicholson, Cody Wagner, Isaiah Brenny, Grace Bauer and Jacob Biermaier. Teacher coordinators were Colleen Petersen and Tim Sullivan.

This school year marks the 25th year the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in fourth through eighth grades.

All Seton and Hastings Middle School students participated in the written round of the bee. From there, the top 10 in each grade qualified for the intermediate round (both written and oral questions). That number was reduced to the 10 who competed last Friday.

Rachel will take another written test for possible advancement to the state contest.

The Hastings Middle School will hold its Geography Bee in January.
