The Prairie Island Indian Community hosts the annual Dakota Singing and Dancing Championship Wacipi Celebration Friday, July 9 through Sunday, July 11. Experience Native American history and traditions through these exciting competitions. This magnificent event is free and open to the public.

Grand Entry performances begin the celebration each day starting on Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 10 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 11 at 1 p.m. Grand Entry is a time to honor veterans and announce the different styles of dancers.

This event features dancers and drummers from all around the United States and Canada. The Wacipi Celebration, or Powwow, features traditional dancers, grass dancers, fancy bustle dancers, northern and southern buckskin dancers, northern and southern cloth dancers, jingle dress dancers and fancy shawl dancers. The dancers are grouped by style and age, and they compete for cash prizes. The judging is based on creativity, keeping the beat and stopping at the right moment.

In addition to the dancers and drummers, the Wacipi Celebration offers delicious Native American food and crafts. There will be a wide array of Indian arts, handmade crafts and jewelry for sale as well as traditional Native American foods available all day during the Wacipi.

The celebration is outdoors next to Treasure Island Resort & Casino. Admission to the Wacipi Celebration is free and open to all ages. For more information call the Prairie Island Indian Community at 1-800-554-5473.
