Police chief job offered to Bryan Schafer

The Hastings City Council’s Public Safety Committee has recommended the city hire Bryan Schafer to fill the vacant police chief position. The city expects Schafer’s first day on the job to be Nov. 4.

Schafer is currently an inspector for Precinct 1 in the Minneapolis Police Department. After getting the committee’s unanimous vote, Schafer has come to an agreement with the city on a conditional job offer. The full city council will vote to approve the hiring at its next meeting, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.

The Public Safety Committee is made up of council members Barb Hollenbeck, Ed Riveness and Danna Elling Schultz.

Hastings’ police chief position became vacant in late July when former chief Paul Schnell resigned to take the police chief position in Maplewood. Since then, Hastings Lieutenant Joe Kegley has been serving as interim police chief.
