"Rachel was absolutely focused and totally motivated," coach John Dewall said. "She knew what she had to do. She had an incredible race. As a ninth-grader, it's just unbelievable. There's not a lot of ninth-graders who go to the state meet. It's just total dedication. Her improvement from last year to this year is just astronomical."

Peterson finished the freestyle leg in 19 minutes and 31.4 seconds, putting her in 13th place. Her classic leg, though, was very strong. She placed sixth with her time of 15:42.8. Her combined time of 35:14.2 put her in eighth.

The section champ was junior Sonja Hedblom from Eagan. She had a time of 31:11.

Sarah Peterson finished 20th for Hastings in 36:53.8. Makaila England took 41st in 43:32.1 and Victoria Zeyen was 50th in 51:25.1. Winona won the meet. Hastings was fifth.

The Hastings boys were led by Joe Rabaey, who took 27th in 32:58.1. Jonah Schill placed 42nd in 36:40.4. James ?Harper was 50th in 40:06.9, Forrest Close was 53rd in 41:24.1 and Nick Johnson was 54th in 44:19.0.

SEC meet

Hastings raced in the Suburban East Conference race last week.

The girls were led by Rachel Peterson, who earned All Suburban East Conference honorable mention honors with her 32nd-place finish. She had a time of 31:20.

"Rachel did great," Dewall said. "She had a great race. That was a huge step up from last year. As a ninth-grader, she's got huge potential. She will be a big scorer for us."

Sarah Peterson was 40th in 33:10. She is a senior.

"She has really stepped it up over the past couple of meets," Dewall said. "She has really raced well."

Makaila England rounded out the Hastings scoring with a 57th place finish in 37:36.

The boys were led by Joe Rabaey, who was 36th in 27:13.

"He did an awesome job," Dewall said. "He was only a couple places away from all-conference honorable mention. I thought he had a great race."

Jonah Schill, an eighth-grader, was 52nd in 31:20.

"Every race, he's getting better and better," Dewall said. "To get 52nd place in our conference when you're in eighth grade, that's huge."

James Harper took 59th in 33:18. It is Harper's second year skiing.

Also racing were: Mike Perra, 63rd, 37:43; Forrest Close, 64th, 37:46; and Nick Johnson, 65th, 39:13.

"We have a whole group of good, young kids coming up here," Dewall said. "They've had a great season. With some more experience, they're going to be skiing real well for us."
