Peterson, Benning lead Raiders at SEC nordic ski meet
The Hastings Nordic ski teams competed at a Suburban East Conference meet on Jan. 2.
The Raiders were led by a couple of familiar faces at the race.
The girls were led by Rachel Peterson, who placed 20th in the meet with a 5k time of 23 minutes and 12 seconds.
The boys were led by Zack Benning, who placed fifth with a time of 17:04.
“He looks really good,” coach John Dewall said. “He’s coming in with the top guys in the powerful SEC. That’s really awesome for Zack.”
The girls meet was won by Stillwater and the boys meet was won by Forest Lake.
“All the kids looked really good,” Dewall said.
Following Peterson for Hastings were:
Hannah Peterson, who was 42nd in 26:23; Abberly Smith, who was 54th in 28:20; Victoria Zeyen, who was 57th in 28:30; Allissa Smith, who was 60th in 28:50; Savannah Henderson, who was 73rd; Alexis Edmundson, who was 81st; and Anna Lindner, who was 83rd.
Hannah Peterson is Rachel’s younger sister. She is just a seventh-grader.
“She skied really well,” Dewall said. “It’s great to have a little young seventh-grader in 42nd. She’s going to be an up-and-coming star.”
The Smiths (Abberly and Allissa) are new to skiing.
“I’m really impressed with them,” Dewall said. “They’re two really good athletes.”
Following Benning for the boys were:
Will Caturia, who was 23rd in 19:26; Kyle Gudmunson, who was 50th in 22:34; Garrett Tuin, who was 62nd in 24:10; Jake Rabaey, who was 76th in 25:08; and Nick Johnson, Christian Flanders and Jake Gahnz.
Dewall was pleased with what he saw from the boys, especially Caturia.
“He skied really well for us,” he said.
Gudmunson also had a good meet.
“That was really impressive,” Dewall said of his 50th place finish. “He’s a brand new skier. He got done racing and kept on going full blast. We thought he was on a cooldown, and he went and skied another 3K. We’re really impressed with him.”
Hastings has another conference meet coming up on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.
